Sri Vijaya Puram, June 25: As part of its ongoing Familiarization (FAM) Tour to North and Middle Andaman, a delegation of the Andaman Association of Tour Operators (AATO), led by its President Shri M. Vinod, called on Shri S. Krishna Chaitanya, Additional District Magistrate/Assistant Commissioner (HQ), North & Middle Andaman District, and held detailed discussions on various issues affecting tourism development in the district.
During the meeting, the AATO delegation briefed the ADM/AC (HQ) about the activities of the Association and its efforts towards promotion of tourism across the Islands. The delegation also shared the observations made during its interaction with tourism stakeholders and boat operators at Baratang earlier in the day.
Shri M. Vinod highlighted the urgent need for construction of a passenger waiting shed at Baratang Jetty to provide adequate shelter and basic amenities for tourists visiting the destination. He informed that the absence of proper waiting facilities causes considerable inconvenience to visitors, particularly during peak tourism season and adverse weather conditions.
The delegation also raised concerns regarding the congestion caused by the movement of a large number of trucks in the first convoy from Jirkatang to Baratang. It was pointed out that trucks occupy most of the available parking space near the jetty, forcing tourist vehicles to queue along the roadside and requiring tourists to walk long distances to access the boat jetty. The delegation suggested that priority may be given to tourist vehicles and essential commodity carriers while regulating the movement of non-essential trucks during peak tourist hours.
The delegation further highlighted the concerns of Baratang boat operators regarding the non-recognition of GP Rating Certificates issued by the Maritime Training Institute under the Tribal Development Council. It was informed that despite several local boat operators and crew members having completed the course, their certificates are reportedly not being accepted by certain authorities, contributing to a shortage of certified crew and affecting the operation of tourist boats in the region.
AATO also requested the Administration to facilitate fresh GP Rating training programmes through approved institutions and expressed its willingness to organize soft skills and hospitality training programmes for boat operators to enhance visitor experience and service standards.
The delegation also drew attention to the immense tourism potential of Ramnagar Beach and requested the Administration to take up development of tourism infrastructure and visitor facilities at the destination. It was suggested that Ramnagar Beach, with its pristine natural setting and accessibility, can emerge as a major tourism attraction in North Andaman if supported by basic amenities and promotional initiatives.
AATO further proposed that the Administration consider organizing a Monsoon Tourism Festival or an Island Tourism Festival event at Ramnagar Beach to showcase the destination, promote local culture, and create economic opportunities for local communities and tourism stakeholders.
Shri S. Krishna Chaitanya patiently heard the concerns and suggestions raised by the delegation and appreciated AATO’s efforts in engaging with grassroots tourism stakeholders. He assured the delegation that the issues would be examined and appropriate action would be taken in coordination with the concerned departments.
The AATO delegation thanked Shri S. Krishna Chaitanya for his positive response and support towards the development of tourism in North and Middle Andaman.
