Sri Vijaya Puram, June 1: A 26-year-old youth has been arrested by Rangat Police in connection with the alleged murder of his uncle following a drunken altercation at Bangaon village under Bakultala area of North and Middle Andaman.
According to village sources, the incident took place on the night of May 28 when the accused, identified as Sonu Kerketta (26), and his uncle Binay Roshan Kerketta (40), both residents of Bangaon village, reportedly got into a heated argument after consuming alcohol. The dispute is believed to have arisen over liquor, with suspicion and accusations leading to a violent confrontation between the two relatives.
Sources stated that during the initial altercation, the deceased allegedly assaulted the accused. Family members present at the spot reportedly intervened and separated the two, preventing further escalation. However, it is believed that the accused later returned and allegedly attacked his uncle with a wooden stick.
Binay Roshan Kerketta sustained serious injuries during the assault. Although the incident occurred on the night of May 28, his condition reportedly deteriorated thereafter and his death came to light the following day.
As per FIR copy, on May 29, Rangat Police received information regarding the death of Binay Roshan Kerketta at his residence in Bangaon village. Following the information, police informed the Executive Magistrate and initiated legal proceedings. An Unnatural Death (UD) case was initially registered and an investigation was launched.
During the course of the investigation, police visited the scene of occurrence, conducted spot inspection, photographed the area, prepared a site plan, and recorded statements of witnesses. The body was shifted to the Community Health Centre (CHC), Rangat for post-mortem examination.
According to the post-mortem examination report received on May 30, the deceased had suffered multiple injuries caused by blunt force trauma. The report revealed fractures of the left 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th ribs, rupture of the spleen, and severe internal bleeding. Medical experts opined that the probable cause of death was acute haemorrhagic shock resulting from abdominal injuries, splenic rupture, and multiple rib fractures.
As per FIR, based on the medical findings and other circumstantial evidence collected during the investigation, police concluded that the death was suspicious and inconsistent with natural causes. Subsequently, the UD case was converted into a murder case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Sources confirmed that Police arrested Sonu Kerketta on May 30 and produced him before the court.
