Kadamtala, Aug. 16: The Andaman and Nicobar Forest Department successfully rescued a large saltwater crocodile from Atarjee Nallah of Kadamtala after days of monitoring and coordinated efforts.
The reptile was first spotted by villagers in a Nallah connected to the sea, following which they immediately alerted the Forest Department. To ensure the safety of both residents and the animal, the Wildlife Rescue Team was dispatched to the site.
Under the leadership of Forest Guard, Ravishankar Poddar, In-charge of the Quick Response Team (QRT), the team set up a specially designed cage trap and maintained round-the-clock vigilance. On August 16, the nearly 3-metre-long crocodile was safely captured.
The operation was carried out by Ravi Shankar Poddar, Raju Gupta, Pravakar Mondal, Manoj Minz, Rakesh Mistry, Ranjit Biswas, and Debashish Biswas. The rescued crocodile was later transported to the Biological Park in Chidiyatapu, South Andaman, where it will be kept in a secure environment.
A Forest Department official said the timely cooperation of villagers and the swift action of the rescue team ensured that the operation was completed without any harm. The department has once again urged residents in crocodile-prone areas to remain alert and immediately report any sightings to the authorities.
