Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept 10: The Electricity Department of Andaman & Nicobar Islands is reeling under an acute shortage of technical manpower, with several crucial engineering positions lying vacant for years. While the public continues to face frequent power cuts and load shedding, insiders point to the chronic failure in filling up posts ranging from senior to junior levels as one of the key reasons for the ongoing crisis.
The Andaman & Nicobar Vidyut Shramik Sangh has formally taken up the issue by submitting a detailed representation to Mr. Manohar Lal Khattar, the Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs. In the letter, State President Mr. Nalli Peddi Raju highlighted the urgent need for revival and filling of various critical posts, including that of Superintending Engineer (Electricity), along with three vacant Executive Engineer positions in Rangat, Diglipur, and Nicobar Division.
The Sangh has also demanded the regularization of the Executive Engineer (PG) post and the immediate filling of 33 vacant Junior Engineer posts, 24 vacant Multi-Tasking Staff posts, and several Mazdoor positions.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha Daily, Mr. Raju said, “Due to long-pending vacancies at both senior and junior levels, the Electricity Department is unable to provide uninterrupted power supply to the people of these Islands. It is high time that the Government takes favorable action to resolve these issues.”
The union stressed that the prolonged delays in recruitment have crippled the department’s ability to deliver on its commitments, and called upon the authorities to act swiftly to address the manpower shortage before the situation worsens further. In this matter the State president of Andaman & Nicobar Vidyut Shramik Sangh had also met with the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration and highlighted this issue, he said.
