Campbell Bay, Nov 07: The fishing community of Great Nicobar has expressed serious concern over arrival of a fishing trawler at Campbell Bay port as they fear that fishing trawler will damage the coastal ecosystem and also pose serious threat to their profession.
The fishing community is also demanding increase in the capacity of the ice plant of Campbell Bay for their daily requirements.
Expressing their anger, the fishing community has been organising protest at Campbell Bay since 06.11.2021 infront of the ice-plant of Campbell Bay and is now planning to organize Chakka Jam tomorrow.
The Tribal Community of Great Nicobar is also supporting the fishing community of Great Nicobar.
Earlier, the Fishermen community of Campbell Bay on November 02.11.2021 had staged a protest against operation of fishing trawlers in the Great Nicobar region and non availability of ice blocks for the fishermen community of the Island.
“We had organized protest earlier also but our demands were not fulfilled and hence we are staging protest once again. We will organize Chakka Jam tomorrow at Campbell Bay as this issue is related to 200 odd fishermen families,” Mr. Purushottam Rao, the head of fishermen community of Campbell Bay told Andaman Sheekha Daily today.
The Assistant Commissioner of Great Nicobar reportedly met the protesting fishermen this evening and assured to place the demands of fishermen community infront of the competent authority to solve this issue
As per details in 2011 also a fishing trawler had come to Campbell Bay port and after protest of fishermen community the trawler left Campbell Bay port.
