Sri Vijaya Puram, September 10: The Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Andaman & Nicobar State Organizing Committee, has urged the State Transport Services (STS) authorities to temporarily divert college-timing buses through RGT Road up to JNRM College between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM, citing difficulties faced by students travelling to the college from various parts of South Andaman.
In a letter dated September 10, SFI Andaman & Nicobar State Convenor Mr. Abdul Warish wrote to the Director, State Transport Services (STS), Sri Vijaya Puram, requesting the temporary diversion of STS buses carrying JNRM students through RGT Road up to the college during the morning hours. The letter was also addressed to the concerned JE, STS and Sub-Division JE for necessary intervention.
According to the SFI, hundreds of students travelling to JNRM College from Jirkatang, Namunaghar, Mithakhari, Ferrargunj, Tushnabad, Wandoor, Chouldhari and surrounding areas are facing inconvenience due to the ongoing police recruitment process and the traffic arrangements associated with it.
The organisation stated that STS buses carrying JNRM students are presently being stopped near Netaji Stadium, forcing students to walk approximately two kilometres to reach the college. The situation is particularly difficult during the morning college hours, when students need to reach their classes on time.
The SFI further pointed out that during rainfall, students are required to cover the entire distance in difficult weather conditions, resulting in hardship, inconvenience and delays in attending classes.
In its representation, the SFI requested the STS authorities to make a temporary arrangement for college-timing buses to operate through RGT Road up to JNRM between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM, wherever operationally feasible, until the police recruitment process and related traffic restrictions are completed.
The organisation said such an arrangement would provide relief to hundreds of students and help ensure their safe and timely arrival at JNRM. It also requested the Director, concerned STS officials and Sub-Division JE to intervene in the matter on an urgent basis and take necessary action in the interest of the student community.
The SFI has additionally sought a written response from the STS authorities clearly indicating the decision taken on its request and the proposed arrangements, if any. It said a written response would help the student community understand the position of the STS authorities and enable it to take up the matter further, if required.
