Port Blair, Dec 03: The Revenue Department’s unreasonable rise in the rate of stamp duty has brought in a perfect storm for several residents of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the most affected are the people who are gifting their land to their son or daughter or any other relative, claims Mr MT Mustafa, President, Island Protection Forum.
Hence, Mr Mustafa has expressed the concerns of the general public to the Lt Governor by addressing a letter to him recently, wherein, he stated that the registration stamp duty increased by the Revenue Department vide notification No. 278, on dated 22nd October 2019, is like 1.5% to 06% for men and 04% for females, which is more than 300 times.
“As a matter of fact that the Island landlords are treated as tenants instead of owner of the land as compared to the other parts of the country and the rates are also too high,” Mr Mustafa further stated.
Mr Mustafa pointed out that the administration didn’t even feel it necessary to invite claims and objections before taking such a huge decision which directly relates to the general public.
Providing the above facts, Mr Mustafa has finally requested the Lt Governor to save the islanders from this unjustified hike or else follow the earlier practice.
While talking to Andaman Sheekha, in this issue, Mr Mustafa also said that if the demand is not considered by the AN Administration, Island Protection Forum is all set to knock the doors of the court for justice.
