Port Blair, Dec 03: Large number of people including the Panchayati Raj Members of Middle Andaman area have decided to stage Dharna from tomorrow against alleged irresponsible road construction works, being carried out by NHIDCL contractors in the region.
The NHIDCL is presently carrying out up-gradation work of Andaman Trunk Road but due to slow pace of work and failure to control dust pollution, the public of the region have now decided to stage protest from tomorrow.
“It is very difficult for children to even breathe these days due to severe dust pollution over Andaman Trunk Road. There are thick clouds of dust where even grown-ups can’t breathe. Most of the parents in this region are not sending their children to school from 2nd December 2019,” said Mr. Lorentus Bara, Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Shivapuram.
According to reports yesterday in Padmapuran School (Class I to Class VIII) there were only 17 students out of 128 and in Shivapuram School (Class I to Class VIII) there were only 03 students out of 15.
“Parents are complaining that the children are having breathing problems due to inhaling of huge amount of dust on regular basis over Andaman Trunk Road,” said Mr. Bara.
He also said that the condition of road is also bad in Middle Andaman region, making it impossible for two and three wheeler riders to drive over Andaman Trunk Road.
The matter has already been brought into the knowledge of the Deputy Commissioner of North and Middle Andaman, Mr. Awanish Kumar, IAS, who has assured to take up this matter.
