Port Blair, Oct.30: In order to enhance the capacity of the community to tackle disaster like situation, one day Training Workshop for Community Disaster Response Volunteer Force (CDRVF) under Community Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) conducted today (Oct.30, 2019) in the Panchayat Samiti Hall, Prothrapur involving the volunteers and PRI members of Gram Panchayats Beodnabad, Calicut and Sippighat.
On this occasion, the chief guest, Shri Apurba Ch. Roy, Pramukh, Panchayat Samiti, Port Blair spoke on the disaster preparedness efforts of the Administration and the role of PRIs and the community, who can play in further strengthen the preparedness levels. The PRIs and CDRVF were requested to participate enthusiastically in making the programme a success, particularly in view of the fact that the islands are vulnerable to various kinds of threats/ disasters.
Shri Vincent-R-Walter, Pradhan, Sippighat also spoke about the importance of disaster preparedness in the community to respond effectively in minimizing the losses. Shri Mohan Nair, Up Pramukh, Smti V. Shanti, Pradhan, Beodnabad and Pradhan, Calicut also attended this workshop.
Shri Gyan Singh, Assistant Director (Logistics), Directorate of Disaster Management welcomed the gathering and described the salient features of the CBDRM programme as well as the expected outcomes and benefits of the programme.
During the technical session, Shri Rajendar Pal, Block Development Officer, Ferrargunj dwelt at length on the preparation of Gram Panchayats Disaster Management Plan and the constitution of committees and CDRVF with their roles and responsibilities in different phases.
Shri Deen Mohammed, Safety Officer, DM elaborated the vulnerability profile of A & N Islands, which are highly susceptible to disasters of varied intensities. Though natural disaster cannot be prevented, but definitely with a holistic and a meticulous approach and plan, impacts can be mitigated. He also explained preparedness mechanism and functions of Disaster Management and State Emergency Operation Centre and about the Emergency Communication System of this UT.
Shri Pradeep Kumar, Team Commander, NDRF elaborated the role and responsibilities of NDRF and subsequently demonstrated the life-saving skills and first aid techniques for community volunteers (CDRVF) and PRIs to respond any disaster.
