Port Blair, September 12: May be from March 2020, the islanders will come out of the fuss of internet connectivity issues in the islands and will start browsing internet without buffering.
A ray of hope has leveled among the islanders after the Japanese Tech Major, NEC Corporation has informed a national daily “The Hindu” that they are scheduled to start the work to install 2,300 km [v1] undersea optical submarine cable system to connect Andaman & Nicobar Islands with mainland through Chennai from December 2019 and complete the cable laying work by March 2020.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has given the contract to Japanese Tech Major, NEC Corporation to design, Engineer, Supply, install and test and implement the cable system.
The contract that was signed between BSNL and Japanese Tech Major, NEC Corporation in July last year is for a system that includes segment with repeaters from Chennai to Port Blair and seven segments without repeaters between the islands of Havelock, Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Kamorta, Great Nicobar, Long Island and Rangat.
The project that aims to carry 100 Gbps optical waves will bring terrific change in the lives of the people living in the remote islands. Due to lack of internet connectivity the islanders were lacking knowledge about the outer world.
Once the submarine cable work will be completed it will bring a big relief for the islanders. Ample number of new businesses will commence in the islands that will bring on more jobs for the unemployed youths who are in current scenario depended mostly upon the government jobs.
Hope this time the action of BSNL and its contractor speak louder than words, in view of the fact that since past 4-5 years islanders are hearing about this project but nothing positive happened yet on this project. (With inputs from The Hindu)
