Port Blair, July 20: Entire South Andaman region is presently facing a peak shortage of 8 MW power as the workers of Suryachakra Power House today shut down all engines and sat on a protest over pending wages.
As a knee jerk reaction the Administration instead of solving the problem permanently, have started load shedding that too without intimating public.
“After last similar protest a few months back, the Secretary Power had reportedly assured to release payment of staffs from the billing amount of the Suryachakra so that the staff do not halt works at Power House but when this promise was not followed all workers have decided to go for a indefinite protest,” said a staff of Suryachakra Power Plant.
According to details today’s strike began at 10.00 am this morning, in which nearly all 48 staffs attached to the power house including technical & Non technical staffs participated.
Earlier the protest was scheduled on 12 May 2017 but after getting assurance from Secretary Power that the management will release salary to all employees by 22 May the protest was postponed.
The Suryachakra Power Corporation Limited (SPCL) is supplying power to Andaman and Nicobar Administration as Independent Power Producers and has a contract till 2018 April.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha one of the employees said that until the salary of the employees is released by the concerned management the strike will be continued.
