Puducherry, Jan 28: The Lt. Governor of A & N Islands and Puducherry, Lt. Gen (Retd.) A K Singh today exhorted women to come forward to work with the police department. Speaking in a function to launch the Mobile App MITRA for sending emergency SOS message when in danger ,an initiative of the Puducherry police ,Mr.Singh said it is regrettable that only six percent women are working with the Puducherry police while,18.20 per centn women are working with the Andaman police force.
About 90 per cent of the traffic police in Andaman are women, Mr Singh,said, adding, the IGP should ensure that at least 33 per cent women work with the police department here. Respecting women, children and the aged is ingrained in our tradition and we have to uphold that value, the Lt.Governor said, adding, it is what make society civilized.
As a society we should ensure an environment safe for women, he reasoned. The App that work on Android platform can be used with ease and without others noticing it. Though this can be used by anyone, Police hope it will be more useful to women, children and the aged, he pointed out. The person in danger need only press the power button of his/her mobile three times to launch the application. The predefined sms message will get forwarded to emergency contacts registered in the application.
The user can register upto 10 and if need be more phone numbers as emergency contacts. There is option to send the sms repeatedly in MITRA till the help reach the person. The message will contain the location of the person and the phone number of the nearest police station. Mr Singh lauded the app team and asked them to come up with a new version that will work with ordinary phones.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister N Rangasamy asked the police to keep abreast with new technologies which is developing at a fast pace.
Mr Rangasamy said with the decline of joint family system, many women stay at home alone. The App will be greatly helpful them, he said, adding, it is imperative to stress the need to impart quality training to the new police recruits so that they can serve people with aplomb. The Government has initiated steps to strengthen marine police wing and another 200 posts will be created for the purpose, the Chief Minister announced. He had handed over orders of Special Grade to selected Police personnel at the function. Around 120 police personnel will get selection Grade that ending stagnation in the service. IG of Police Praveer Ranjan outlined the major steps taken by Puducherry Police to ensure women’s safety. The orce will increase its women members in a phased manner and achieve 33 per cent goal set by the Union Government, Mr Ranjan added.Manoj Parida, Chief Secretary and Sreekath ,Secretary to LG, were among those, who attended the function.
