Port Blair, Mar 22: ICAR – Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) conducted a three days training programme on “Spices production technology as a livelihood option for Island farmers” at CIARI, Port Blair from 19.03.2015 to 21.03.2015 in association with ACANI, funded by NABARD, Port Blair.
Speaking on the occasion of the valedictory function Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CIARI, lauded the effort of the team of the division of horticulture & forestry, KVK and Social Science Section in planning and execution of the training, which could result in perceptible increase in the knowledge as evident from the post evaluation report. He also expressed his happiness on the participation of cent per cent women trainees representing from different SHGs, which speaks about women empowerment. He concluded his speech by advising the trainees to adopt the technologies they have learned in their farming system for improving their livelihood. Dr.R.K.Gautam, HoD, H&F, Father Evans, Director, ACANI, Dr.K.Abirami, Course Director and Dr.S.K.Zamir Ahmed, Inchage Social Science Section also spoke on the occasion.
Interactive lectures were delivered on the package of practices, pest and disease problem, weed management, irrigation, composting and post harvest processing of spices by the resource persons of ICAR-CIARI and KVK, Port Blair. A field visit was arranged to the Sipighat farm of CIARI, where the trainees were given practical demonstration on propagation techniques and harvesting and processing of different spice crops. A pre and post evaluation of knowledge was conducted by Dr. S.K. Zamir Ahmed, I/C, Social Science Section, CIARI.
