on recycling, safe disposal was conducted in the entire area of Rangat under the banner of Swatch Bharat Abhiyan, today with the active participation of Schools, Government Departments, NGOs, PRIs and Business houses.
At the outset the drive was inaugurated by Mr.Vikas Ahlawat, Assistant Commissioner, Middle Andaman at 7 AM, Dr.M.Joy CMO I/c CHC Rangat was the key speaker of the awareness campaign. Soon after the cleaning drive began by allocating a particular locality to each group consisting of students and teachers from JNV Panchwati, GSSS Sabari, GSSS Rangat, VKV Rangat, various departments, NGOs, business houses etc. Where they have cleaned all the plastic wastes from roadside Nalahs and safely disposed it with help of Gram Panchayat, Rangat. The schools were exhorted to participate in the drive with a rally with slogans and placards. The children of higher classes made groups of five and educated the households on the need of plastic free Rangat.
The aims and objectives of the campaign was to create awareness among the population, since it is noticed that Rangat streets were spread over with different remnants of plastic products namely plastic bags, left over cartons, polythene bags etc, which created unsightly and unwelcome atmosphere. The plastics thrown to roadsides fall into drainage which block the flow of water and increase the sedimentation of silt in the drains and impede the flow of the drains and if deposited in the ground will prevent the water from going inside the earth, thereby the ground water sources are depleted. The plastics in the sea cause disastrous effect on the fishes, as it gets trapped in plastic bags in the high seas. There are several other deleterious effects posed by plastics since its disintegration in the soil takes more than 300 years.
The whole effort of the campaign was part of the ongoing Swatchta Mission wherein, in a phased manner garbages were removed, drains were cleared, bushes were cut and road sides were dressed through different month’s operation.
