Two Days Long Protest of Fishermen Ends

Port Blair, Dec 06: Two day long protest by Fishermen of Port Blair city today ended after Chief Secretary of A & N Administration held a meeting with a delegation of fishermen this afternoon at Secretariat. During the meeting it has been reportedly assured by Chief Secretary to release compensation to the family members of the deceased Late Padmawati, 35, W/o Joga Rao, R/o Junglighat, whose death at G B Pant Hospital, after a surgery, had triggered protest. During the meeting it was also reportedly assured by the Chief Secretary to conduct the Post Mortem Examination (PME) of the body by a medical board.
“The Chief Secretary has reportedly also assured to take care of the education of the children of Late Padmawati. After which the protest ended this evening. It was also decided by the protestors to allow PME of the body tomorrow,” Mr. Mahendra Pasad, councilor of Ward No.7, who accompanied the protesters both the days, told Andaman Sheekha today.
Earlier the massive protest rally was brought out by fishermen, which passed through Dairy Farm, Junglighat, Goal Ghar, Delanipur, Mohanpura, Bazaar, Model School Junction, Middle Point, Goal Ghar and link road. Later the rally halted at Secretariat entrance gate.
The Bandh called by the protesters got mixed response. Although good number of shops, in the said route, were closed during the rally but later most of the shops were opened. “The protest was a great success,” Prasad added.
