Port Blair, Oct 31: Dr. P. Vijayachari, Director, Regional Medical Research Center (ICMR), Port Blair has been awarded the Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS). The fellowship was awarded in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the fields of Chikungunya, Dengue, Tuberculosis, Lymphatic filariasis, Diarrheal diseases and Leptospirosis.
The academy noted and cited that his contributions are noteworthy and commendable in establishment of H1N1 (Swine flu) laboratory facilities in the centers in a short period during the epidemic in 2009 and timely provided diagnostic support to the local health authorities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The National Academy of Medical Science is an institution that fosters academic excellence to meet its goal and objectives. Every year, the Academy bestows fellowship to biomedical scientists of eminence, who have distinguished themselves in their respective areas of specialization.
Dr. Vijaychari received the fellowship during the annual convocation of the Academy (NAMSCON 2013) held at all India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jodhpur on 26th October 2013. Earlier, Dr. Vijayachari had received various prestigious awards and recognitions for his research contributions including ICMR prize for biomedical research, nomination to World Health Organization’s Leptospirosis Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (LERG) and ICMR international fellowship for young biomedical scientists.
