Port Blair, October 31: Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) A. K. Singh, today led the Islanders in paying rich tributes to the former Prime Minister of India, late Smt Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary observed as Rashtriya Sankalp Diwas (National Dedication Day). Rich tributes were also paid to Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel on his birth anniversary. To mark the occasion, a function was organized in the JNRM Auditorium here this morning in which the Lt Governor garlanded the portraits of Smt Indira Gandhi and Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel and paid floral tributes to the great leaders.
The Lt Governor also administered a pledge to the gathering present at the auditorium. Pledge was administered to work with dedication to preserve and strengthen the unity, integrity, sovereignty and secular spirit of the nation. Two minute silence was also observed on the occasion. Teachers and students of Education department presented patriotic songs on the occasion.
To mark the day, befitting programmes highlighting the sacrifice of Smt Gandhi for the unity and integrity of the country and the contribution of these two great leaders in nation building were also organized at various places of the Islands.
