Sri Vijaya Puram, July 3: North & Middle Andaman Zilla Parishad Adhyaksh Mr. Alagar Swami has urged the district administration to ensure immediate compensation for families affected by the recent heavy rainfall and flash flooding in Diglipur and adjoining areas.
Speaking on the widespread damage caused by incessant rains on July 1 and 2, Mr. Alagar Swami said several villages, including Madhupur, Ramakrishna Gram, D.B. Gram, Rabindrapally, Krishnapuri, Subhashgram, Milan Gram, Paschim Sagar and other nearby areas, suffered significant losses after floodwaters entered residential localities.
According to him, floodwaters inundated numerous houses, damaging essential household items such as stored rice, refrigerators, washing machines, clothing and other belongings, causing considerable hardship to affected families.
The Adhyaksh appealed to the Deputy Commissioner of North & Middle Andaman and the Assistant Commissioner, Diglipur, to ensure that damage assessment is completed at the earliest so that compensation reaches the affected families without delay. He described the situation as a natural calamity and stressed that timely financial assistance would provide much-needed relief to the victims.
Mr. Alagar Swami also appreciated the efforts of the district administration and officials who promptly visited the affected areas during the flash flood. He expressed hope that all eligible victims would receive compensation after the completion of the official survey and assured that he would continue pursuing the matter with the administration until relief reaches every deserving family.
The appeal comes against the backdrop of extensive flooding reported across several villages, including Vidyasagar Ward No. 1, Subhashgram, Ramakrishna Gram and nearby areas, where rainwater entered residential and agricultural areas following continuous heavy rainfall.
Local representatives stated that many houses in Vidyasagar Ward No. 1 remained inundated, while large parts of Subhashgram were also submerged. The flash flooding caused widespread damage to agriculture, with poultry farms being washed away and standing crops suffering heavy losses. Vegetable crops, including ladyfinger, chilli and ridge gourd, as well as arecanut and other plantations spread over several hectares, were severely affected, resulting in substantial losses for farmers and local residents.
