Diglipur, July 02: Following continuous heavy rainfall that triggered a flood-like situation across several villages in Diglipur, Andaman Sheekha spoke to local Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) representatives today afternoon to assess the ground situation and understand the extent of damage caused by the incessant rains.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha, Kerelapuram Zilla Parishad Member Ms. Sunity Halder said that several villages, including Vidyasagar Ward No. 1, Subhashgram and Ramakrishnagram, were severely affected after rainwater entered residential and agricultural areas.
She stated that many houses in Vidyasagar Ward No. 1 remained inundated, while large parts of Subhashgram were also submerged. According to her, the floodwaters caused extensive losses to farmers and residents, with poultry farms being washed away and standing crops suffering heavy damage. Vegetable crops, including ladyfinger (okra), chilli and ridge gourd, along with arecanut and other plantations spread over several hectares, were badly affected.
Ms. Halder said the worst-hit areas include Vidyasagar Ward No. 1, Subhashgram and Ramakrishnagram, where many families have suffered substantial losses. She urged the Administration to immediately deploy NDRF/SDRF teams, along with officials from the Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Departments, to conduct a detailed damage assessment.
Meanwhile, Ramakrishnagram PRI representative Mr. Shyamal Bhowmick told Andaman Sheekha that Ward Nos. 1, 5 and 6 of Ramakrishnagram were among the affected areas, with at least seven families reporting floodwater entering their homes. He said the full extent of property loss would become clear only after a detailed inquiry.
Mr. Bhowmick added that arrangements have already been made to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner to the affected families until normalcy is restored. He said local authorities and PRI members are closely monitoring the situation and extending all possible assistance to the residents.
With rainfall continuing across North Andaman, residents have expressed concern that further showers may worsen the situation, while local representatives have called for immediate government intervention, rapid damage assessment and timely relief to the affected families.
