Sri Vijaya Puram, June 04: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), through the State Control Room, has issued a weather warning for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds over the next several days.
According to the weather bulletin issued on Thursday afternoon, heavy rainfall (07–11 cm) accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 40–60 kmph is likely to occur at one or two places across the Islands on June 5. Similar weather conditions, including thunderstorms with gusty winds of 40–50 kmph, are expected to continue till June 10.
The IMD has also issued a fishermen warning for the Andaman and Nicobar coast. Squally winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are expected to prevail along and off the coast from June 5 to June 8. Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea during this period due to rough weather and unsafe sea conditions.
In addition, a swell surge alert has been issued for coastal areas of the Islands. Sea waves ranging between 1.6 and 1.7 metres are forecast during the period, creating the possibility of surging waves along vulnerable coastal stretches. Small boats, fishermen, and coastal residents have been advised to exercise extreme caution.
A farmer warning has also been issued, advising farmers to take precautionary measures to protect standing crops, livestock, and agricultural infrastructure from heavy rain and strong winds.
The Administration has urged residents, tourists, fishermen, and seafarers to remain alert, follow official advisories, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions, and immediately report any emergency situation to the concerned authorities.
The weather department has indicated that conditions are likely to remain unsettled over the Islands during the coming week, and further updates will be issued as necessary.
