Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec. 5: The deteriorating condition of STS buses across the islands has become a growing concern for daily commuters. Frequent reports of bus breakdowns, coupled with visible wear and tear, are raising questions about the maintenance standards of the fleet.
For months now, several media units and social media platforms have highlighted the poor state of STS buses operating in remote islands. Unfortunately, the condition in Sri Vijaya Puram city appears no different. Commuters point out that even within the city limits, STS buses can often be seen parked in breakdown condition, with damaged exteriors and ageing body frames.
The situation is particularly disappointing in the case of the electric buses, which were once introduced with much fanfare. With their vibrant colours and modern appearance, these buses were initially among the most eye-catching vehicles on the roads. Today, however, many of them look worn out and poorly maintained, resembling decade-old vehicles rather than modern additions to the fleet. In several electric buses, the rear body panels are visibly damaged, and in some cases, body sheets are tied together with ropes—raising serious safety questions.
Commuters say such conditions instill fear rather than confidence. “How can passengers feel safe getting into buses that look like they could fall apart anytime?” a daily office-goer remarked.
While STS has undeniably played a critical role in keeping Andaman’s public transportation network functioning, stakeholders argue that the fleet urgently requires systematic and professional maintenance. Sri Vijaya Puram was once in the race to become a Smart City, and lakhs of tourists visit the islands each year. Poorly maintained public buses leave a negative impression of the Administration and the local governance system.
More importantly, passenger safety remains paramount. With rising concerns about the reliability and roadworthiness of the buses, experts and commuters alike stress the need for an immediate safety audit of the entire STS fleet. Ensuring timely repairs, routine inspections and strict adherence to safety standards will be crucial in restoring public confidence in the island’s transport system.
