Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov. 27: A fresh wave of public concern has emerged in Mayabunder after a major power failure disrupted normal life on Thursday. According to a written representation submitted by former Pramukh of Mayabunder Mr. Abdul Siddique to the Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner of North & Middle Andaman, electricity in Mayabunder went off around 1:00 PM and had not been restored even after six hours.
In his letter, Mr. Siddique highlighted that this is not an isolated incident. A similar large-scale outage occurred on September 23, 2025, when power supply remained disrupted for more than 20 hours, severely affecting residents and essential services.
He pointed out that despite repeated complaints, the problem persists. The electricity supply contract has been handled by a Private Company for the past 4–5 years, during which the firm has been receiving lakhs of rupees every month. However, Mr. Siddique alleged that the company has failed to maintain a permanent qualified technician at the Mayabunder power house. Instead, a technician occasionally visits from Delhi, provides temporary fixes, and returns to the mainland.
Mr. Siddique blamed the Electricity Department for inadequate monitoring and lack of accountability. “Mayabunder is the district headquarters with critical offices such as the DC’s office, major departments, and the district hospital. A power failure brings all essential services to a standstill,” he wrote, noting that previous outages caused losses to the business community, hampered students’ studies, and affected patient care.
Calling the situation a serious administrative lapse, Mr. Siddique urged the district authorities to initiate a detailed inquiry into the functioning of Power Producing Private Company as well as the Electricity Department. He further requested immediate alternative power arrangements from Diglipur or Rangat, as practiced earlier during prolonged outages.
He stressed the need for a permanent technical staff member to be stationed at the Mayabunder power house to prevent recurring disruptions. Mr. Siddique appealed for strict action against those responsible for the continuous power failures and sought urgent intervention in the interest of the public.
