
Port Blair, July 10: CITU observed All India Demands Day throughout the country today (10.7.2024) on various demands of the working class.
In Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the main programme was held at Port Blair. Hundreds of workers from different unions affiliated to CITU held a massive demonstration in front of the Port Blair Municipal Council in the evening today. Inaugurating the Mass Demonstration, R. Surendran Pillai, President of the CITU A & N State Committee criticized the central government for bringing the 4 Labour Codes in place of two dozen existing labour laws and said that these Labour Codes will take away many of the rights the workers were enjoying all these years.
Speaking on the occasion, B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU State Committee said that the Modi government is pursuing anti-working class policies in the country at the behest of his friends in the corporate sector. He said that the BJP-led government is trying to sell the assets created by in the country in the public sector undertakings of the country.
D. Ayyappan, Vice President, CITU State Committee briefly explained each of the demands on which the All India Demands Day is being observed. SP Kalairajan, General Secretary, ASNVMS and Anand Rajan, Secretary, CITU State Committee also addressed the gathering. Shyamal Koley, Treasusrer and P. Sathyapal, Secretary CITU Committee were also present on the occasion.
The demands highlighted during the All India Demands Day are (1) Scrap 4 Labour Codes (2) Scrap MNP and stop all forms of privatization (3) Minimim wages @ Rs. 26,000 per month (4) Ensure job security for contract workers (5) Scrap Agniveer (6) Ensure social security for unorganized workers (7) Scrap NPS, restore OPS, Ensure minimum pension Rs. 9,000/- or above for EPS pensioners, (8) Regularise the services of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers and ASHA Workers, etc. Local demands like (i) regularization of services of all DRM/Contract workers and (ii) grant 1/30th of pay plus DA to all the remaining DRMs in PBMC, Forest, PRI, etc were also highlighted during the Mass Demonstration.
