Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept 02: Former Chairperson of the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council (SVPMC), Kavitha Udhayakumar, has urged the authorities to take immediate action for the repair and restoration of the damaged and blocked drain and culvert opposite Sanjeev Gandhi Market along the NH Road at Bathubasti.
In a representation addressed to the Lieutenant Governor, Member of Parliament, Chief Secretary, Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, and the Assistant Secretary (AR Wing), Kavitha Udhayakumar highlighted the serious and long-pending civic issue affecting the area.
She stated that the drain and culvert are presently in a severely damaged and blocked condition, completely obstructing the free flow of storm water and wastewater. As a result, sanitary workers of the Municipal Council are repeatedly required to clear the blockage under difficult conditions merely to restore temporary water flow.
She pointed out that such repeated cleaning can only provide a temporary solution and stressed the need for permanent repair and restoration of the drainage infrastructure.
According to her, the matter has already been represented several times to the concerned National Highway authorities, requesting permanent remedial measures. However, no lasting repair work has reportedly been undertaken so far.
The present condition poses a risk of water stagnation and overflow, particularly during heavy rainfall, and could cause considerable inconvenience to pedestrians, nearby residents and commercial establishments.
Kavitha Udhayakumar has appealed to the authorities for their urgent intervention and requested that the matter be taken up with the concerned NH officials to ensure that the damaged and blocked drain and culvert are repaired and restored at the earliest.
She emphasised that permanent remedial action is necessary in the larger interest of public safety, sanitation and convenience and expressed hope for immediate and favourable action from the concerned authorities.
