Port Blair, Mar 03: With an aim to foster interest and love for chess among elderly people, a chess tournament for seniors was organized by the Andaman Nicobar Chess Association (ANCA) in collaboration with the Chinmaya Mission Port Blair on 03.03.2024 at Chinmaya Mission Port Blair
Dr. Nitin Shakya, Director, Social Welfare, A & N Administration was the chief guest of the inaugural ceremony who made the ceremonial first move against 84 old chess player Mr. Sharda Ram to kick start the event in presence of Swami Shuddhananda Saraswati, Resident Acharya, Chinmay Mission Port Blair and office bearers of Chinmaya Mission and ANCA.
Speaking on the occasion the chief appreciated the efforts of the organiser for organising the chess tournament for elderly and assured all possible help from the Department of Social Welfare for such activities in the future.
The tournament was successfully concluded with a prize distribution ceremony where Comdt. AKS Srimannarayana of the Indian Coast Guard won the first prize and remained unbeaten in the tournament with 5 points from 5 rounds. Mr. T Rama Rao of Haddo secured the second position while P Tata Rao of Bambooflat and Laltu Biswas of Manglutan finished third and fourth respectively.
Dr. Chanda Srivastava was adjudged the best female player while Mr. Sharda Ram was adjudged the best oldest player.
Mr. Rajesh Anand, ADG Rotary Club Port Blair and B Dinesh Kumar, past President of Rotary Club Port Blair graced the occasion as the guests for the Closing ceremony who gave away prizes and certificates to the winners.
