Port Blair, Nov 05: The Andaman Law College in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), A & N Islands, organized a Special Interactive Workshop to enhance awareness and understanding of the legal landscape surrounding the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 and the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 featuring expert insights from the Learned District and Sessions Judge, Mr. Anupam Mukherjee, Chairman, DLSA and the Learned Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr. Bhawani Shankar Sharma, Special Judge, POCSO Court & NDPS Court, Port Blair, A & N Islands.
Speaking on the occasion, the Learned District and Sessions Judge delivered an engaging and informative lecture that deepened the attendees’ understanding of the POSCO Act and NDPS Act. He underlined the need to create mass awareness about the legislation to effectively eliminate and address the social evils related to sexual offenses against children and aggregate ill effects of drug consumption.
In his keynote address, Learned Additional District & Sessions Judge encouraged active participation and provided an excellent opportunity for the students of Andaman Law College to understand the entire nuances on the said topic. He highlighted that it is essential for the law students to grasp the intricacy of these Acts along with their practical implications and quoted ‘Mera Sharir Mera Adhikar’ as a preventive measure against sexual offenses. He also cautioned the side effects of illicit usage of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances and its impact on the consumer, the family and the society in whole.
In his welcome address, Mr. Prashant Bhadu, Principal (i/c), ALC, said that the POCSO and NDPS Act are vital pieces of legislation that are continually evolving and discussion among the masses on these topics is the need of hour to curb such tendencies.
The workshop served as a platform to connect the law students with real-world legal challenges and foster a deeper understanding of the role they will play in society as legal professionals. About 200 students and staff of Andaman Law College participated in the workshop.
