Port Blair, May 15: Chowra Island, located in the Nicobar District of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, continues to face significant challenges in terms of network connectivity and landline services, despite the digital advancements in Andaman after arrival of Optical Submarine Cable. With a population of approximately 1500 residents, the isolated Chowra Island, situated around 6.5 miles away from Terrasa Island of the Nancowrie group of islands, remains isolated from the rest of the world due to the absence of reliable network connectivity.
Mr. Boris, a resident of Chowra Islands, expressed frustration over the lack of network connectivity and telecom facilities. He said that students, in particular, are severely impacted as they are unable to attend online classes, while the youths face difficulties in applying for online applications, necessitating travel to other islands for any online work.
Mr. Hillary, the Secretary of the Tribal Council in Nancowrie and Captain of Chowra Island, emphasized the urgent need for network connectivity and expressed disappointment that despite numerous letters and appeals to the authorities, no action has been taken. He highlighted the complete absence of network towers on Chowra Islands.
In response to the pressing situation, the tribal population has recently reached out directly to Arjun Munda, the Union Tribal Minister, who has provided assurances of addressing the matter. This has instilled a glimmer of hope among the tribal population, as they seek a resolution to the longstanding connectivity issues faced by Chowra Island.
Immediate action is now required to bridge the digital divide and ensure reliable network connectivity and communication infrastructure on Chowra Island, enabling its residents to participate fully in the digital era.
