Port Blair, Nov 14: The Forest Department of Andaman and Nicobar Islands today said that the department suspects involvement of its own staffs in Elephant Tusk Seizure case.
On November 8, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) and Central Crime Station (CCS) units of A & N Police had seized two elephant tusks from Port Blair and arrested three persons for their efforts to sell those wildlife materials.
Talking to ‘Andaman Sheekha’ the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, DV Negi today said that there are two possibilities behind availability of elephant tusk in black market of Andamans.
“The stock may either have gone out of the seized stock and if it is done then there will be involvement of staffs of this department,” the PCCF said.
However, he also said that there could be another possibility of poaching of elephants from North Andaman Islands.
According to reports Shyam Nagar Village of Diglipur Island and Interview Island of North Andaman have more than 50 Feral Elephants.
When asked if the Forest Department has failed to protect elephants from poachers the PCCF said “if the forest department is not doing anything how these elephants are being protected for such a long time.”
