Port Blair, Sept 06: Heavy rain today exposed that how mismanaged the entire system of Andaman and Nicobar Island is. A few hour long rainfall today flooded coastal belts and blocked several important roads, giving nightmare to Islanders.
Roads at Mohanpura, Corbyn’s Cove Junction, Minnie Bay, Protherapur were flooded by rainwater while muddy water gust inside dozens and dozens of houses in many areas of South Andaman.
A fuel carrying truck got struck in Prothrapur road, which was inundated with rainwater, because of this, other vehicles were diverted towards other direction, which resulted in traffic jam.
At Prothrapur, some people had to climb on the terrace to save themselves from rainwater, which flooded their house.
Here at Minnie Bay, residents and businessmen blocked the Minnie Bay road protesting against the flood like situation. They were fuming as rainwater flooded their houses and shops.
At Nayagaon, a retaining wall collapsed on the Nayagaon Junction, after which some newly constructed government quarters became susceptible to further land sliding.
Another retaining wall collapsed at Dairy Farm this afternoon, crushing a hut and several people, who were later rescued by Fire-Fighters.
These all incidents showed how unprepared are we in Andaman and Nicobar Islands to face any disaster. “If we experience continuous rainfall for a few days or suffer a cloud bust, one can understand what would be the consequences. The Administration is totally unprepared,” alleged a resident of Dairy Farm.
