Port Blair, Nov 29: The rate published by the Department of Civil Supplies today for Onions in the market has created tremendous confusion among the general public when they saw the rate actually differs in the market.
Many denizens of Port Blair city were seen arguing with the Onion Vendors today as the vendors were selling the Onions at as high as Rs 130 per kilogram.
“When the Civil Supplies cannot control the rates on the ground level then why they are publishing false information in the media,” questioned Mr C Hawaldar, a resident of Bhathubasti.
As per reports, the rates published in the government media i.e Daily Telegram, mentioned Onion rates in the Island’s market as Rs 70-80, whereas, the Onion rates in the entire country is sky high.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, a senior official of the Civil Supplies Department said that the content was wrongly published in the Daily Telegram and he apologized for the same. “We also don’t have the right to fix the prices of Onion,” the senior official added.
The senior official also confirmed that the correct rates of the Onion will be published tomorrow to deal with the confusion among islanders.
Meanwhile, the high rate of Onions is brining tears for customers. Many street food stall owners have already stopped using Onions. If the prices continue to rise, hotels are likely to stop preparing dishes using onion as base. The price of onion has been increasing steadily over the past few weeks. There is a shortage of supply of onion that is supplied to the markets in Andaman
