Port Blair, Sept 29: A two day National Seminar on the topic “Migration of Indian Labourers & Socio-Economic Status- A Case study of Andaman & Nicobar Islands” sponsored by ICSSR – East Zone and NABARD, in collaboration with JNRM was inaugurated in JNRM on 28th September 2016.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Smti.Tanvi Garg, IAS, Secretary(Edu) highlighted the unique nature of migration patterns in the A & N Islands. She traced the different types of migrations that took place in the islands from the Penal colony times to the present. Recollecting her days as a student of Economics she spoke at length on the problems of rural and urban migration, carrying capacity etc. She expressed the hope that the deliberations during the seminar will be useful in planning the future development activities in the Islands. Delivering the key note address, Dr. Samir Das, Dean of Arts, University of Kolkata, informed the audience that the literature regarding the migration of Andaman is sporadic and one has to study intensively to know the real cause of migration. The Guest of Honor Shri Hemant B Songadkar, General Manager, NABARD said, NABARD assures all help to support efforts related to rural development. He also spoke about NABARD’s commitment to creating livelihood and capacity building of labourers.
Welcoming the gathering Dr. N.Francis Xavier, Principal, JNRM thanked the Administration and NABARD for their support to JNRM. Dr. Hema Banerjee, HOD Economics and Convener of the seminar proposed vote of thanks.
