Port Blair, July 22: Mr. A. L. Sevugamurthy, the employee of Andaman & Nicobar Aids Control Society who had self immolated infront of the office of A & N AIDS Control Society breathed his last at Medica Super specialist Hospital this morning.
Father of two, Counselor at Andaman and Nicobar Aids Control Society, Mr. A. L. Sevugamurthy, known as Murthy among his friends was a poet, writer, singer, anchor and performer and was working in ANACS since last nearly 15 years on temporary basis. Since last three months he was not given his salary and adding to the pain he was transferred to Havelock, which allegedly put him under tremendous psychological stress, ultimately resulting in such an act.
Murthy, who used to love life and had innumerable friends and admirers, fell victim of this system.
The Lt Governor has already directed Chief Secretary to immediately institute an inquiry into the cause of self-immolation attempt by Shri A. L. Sevugamurthy. As per LG’s direction the inquiry will look into all aspects of the matter, including the reasons and circumstances leading to the self-immolation attempt and also look into the accountability of the officers/officials responsible for managing the affairs of the society.
Although no inquiry will bring Murthy back for his wife and little kids but hope that the inquiry will be able to pin point the cause and responsibility will be fixed on those who created such a situation, which forced a creative person like Mr. A. L. Sevugamurthy to take his life by setting himself on fire.
