Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov. 6: Pursuant to the directions issued by the Lt. Governor, A&N Islands to ensure consumer protection and prevent unfair trade practices during the ongoing festive season, the Legal Metrology Wing of the Department of Consumer Affairs & Civil Supplies (CS&CA) carried out extensive surprise inspections on 05.11.2026 across major firecracker retail and wholesale outlets at ITF Ground.
The special drive focused on enforcing compliance with the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 and ensuring that consumers are not subjected to overcharging or misleading package information.
During the inspections, enforcement team verified key mandatory parameters, including:
• Maximum Retail Price (MRP) Compliance: Strictly checking for instances of overcharging beyond the declared MRP and ensuring stickers or re-stickering are not used to inflate prices.
• Mandatory Declarations: Ensuring all firecracker packages contain complete information, such as manufacturer name and address, net quantity, month and year of manufacture/packing, and consumer care details.
• Dual MRP & Alterations: Verifying that no dual pricing or tampering with printed package declarations is occurring.
Several establishments were inspected and booked during the drive for violating the provisions of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, and improvement notices were issued to non-compliant traders for rectifying the violations under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
The Department of CS&CA strictly directs all manufacturers, importers, packagers, and retailers of firecrackers to sell packages containing all mandatory declarations at fair prices. Any violation will invite stringent penalty action under the law.
Consumers are urged to inspect product packages carefully for mandatory declarations before purchase.
To report non-compliance or file complaints regarding overcharging or missing package declarations, consumers can contact this Department either in writing or by Consumer Helpline Toll Free No. 18003453197 or Telephone No. 03192-230337.
