Port Blair, Sept 25: On 25th September 2014, to mark the first day of a week long campaign “Swachchha Bharath Saptah (Clean India Week)”, cleanliness drive was organized by the District Administration at Mayabunder. The Deputy Commissioner ( N & M Andaman), Shri G.L.Meena, IAS flagged off the event and appealed to the gathering of more than 500 persons to join hands to practice cleanliness so as to achieve the goal of total sanitation across the country. Shri Anisha Kalkoor, DFO, Mayabunder, Dr.R.N.Rath, Principal, MGGC, local PRI members and senior officials of Mayabunder were present during the occasion. The campaign aims to create awareness in government bodies, NGOs and community at large for their full involvement in achieving the goal of clean India.
On the occasion, students from the Mahatma Gandhi Govt. College, Mayabimnder, presented a “Nukkad Natak”, a street play emphasizing the importance of everyday cleanliness. For effective publicity and increased participation, constant contacts were being established with the local people through media campaign, flash messages, banners and placards. Earlier, meetings were conducted with PRI members and officials of the district to chalk out the programs for “Clean India Week’ campaign.
The shramdhaan event in eight stretches covered the entire area from Mayabunder Helipad to Mayabunder Jetty, was supervised by the officials of various line departments. Staff from Revenue, Forest & Wildlife, Police, APWD, PMB, ALHW, Electricity, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, students from MGG College, PRI members, local shop keepers and general public actively participated in the campaign. The event for the day concluded around 10.00 AM.
