Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 17: World Ozone Day was observed yesterday to create awareness about the ozone layer and India’s promise to follow the Montreal Protocol and its Kigali Amendment. These agreements aim to stop the use of ozone-damaging chemicals and cut substances that heat the planet. This year’s theme is “Global Action for a Cooler Planet.”
The Department of Science and Technology organised awareness and education programmes for school and college students in N&M Andaman, including Diglipur, Mayabunder and Rangat. For the first time, the Department also held a science seminar for college students of MGG College, Mayabunder. Senior Secondary students of GSS School, Garacharama, visited the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration workshop at Government ITI, Dollygunj. The visit helped them see how refrigeration and air-conditioning work and how these technologies relate to protecting the ozone layer.
A quiz was held among students from five Senior Secondary schools in which Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, Sri Vijaya Puram, Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School and Govt. Boys’ Senior Secondary School secured first, second & third position respectively. A poster-making competition for senior secondary and college students was also organised.
The programmes ended on Sept. 16 with an inter-college science seminar at Tagore Government College of Education (TGCE), Sri Vijaya Puram, on the theme ‘Global Action for a Cooler Planet.’ During the closing session, winning students from the South Andaman area were given cash prizes.
