Diglipur, Jan 10: The Lt. Governor, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM inaugurated the Diglipur Vikas Mela as the chief guest at a function held in the Vivekananda Stadium, Diglipur today. The Lt. Governor inspected the stalls of different departments of the Administration, put up in the Mela.
Addressing a large gathering on the occasion, the Lt. Governor expressed happiness that the Mela still gain significance despite availability of cable TV in every house. Large crowd still participate and enjoy the Mela, he said. Through this Mela, the main departments’ activities are being brought to the knowledge of the people under one roof. All departments put up their stalls in the Mela and are creating awareness among the people of the various activities being implemented by the respective departments, he said. In fact people in the far flung rural areas are unable to take the benefit of various Government schemes owing to lack of knowledge. This Mela will provide these knowledge to them and they will be benefited to a great extent, he said.
Informing about the developments, that had taken place in the Islands, the Lt. Governor said that Vivekananda Stadium will now be available for all social functions free of cost. Meanwhile, Diglipur Community Health Centre has started a Saraykhana, which will ease the accommodation problems of patients from far flung areas, coming for treatment, he said. The target of 100% electrification work has been completed in rural areas like Shantinagar, Gandhinagar and Smith Island.
The Lt. Governor said that students of the islands have been facilitated with free bus pass in STS buses. Air subsidy is being provided to stretcher patients. Under Public Distribution System, subsidy amount will be directly transferred into the bank accounts of ration cards holders. A Help Desk has been set up, in which people can register online complaints for which immediate action will be taken up. This will greatly help people of the far flung areas, the Lt. Governor said.
A colourful cultural programme was presented by the school students to mark the occasion.
The Adhyaksha Zilla Parishad, N&M Andaman, Smt. Madhuri Giri, Pramukh, Panchayat Samiti, Diglipur, Mr. Gourango Dutta and PRI members also graced the occasion.
