Port Blair, Feb 15: The family of Late Mr. Samir Acharya has instituted ‘The Samir Acharya Memorial Award’ for the Conservation of Coastal and Islands Ecosystems to Mr. Chanchal Singha Roy. The jury of Dr. Simronjit Singh, Dr. Manish Chandi and Ms. Samhita Veda Acharya zeroed in on the winner this year.
Mr. Chanchal Singha Roy is a dedicated Islander who has worked relentlessly through the years spreading awareness amongst students for the conservation of our Natural Heritage.
Late Mr. Samir Acharya was the most well-known environmentalist and foremost advocate for sustainable development of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He was equally concerned for the equitable future of both the settlers and Indigenous Islanders of both archipelagos.
The Acharya family consists of Mrs. Geetanjali Acharya w/o Mr. Samir Acharya, daughter Ms. Samhita Veda Acharya and grandson Master Marvellous Giles announced the award to be presented on 16th February 2022 on the occasion of Mr. Samir Achaya’s Birthday.
The jury member, Dr. Simronjit Singh is a Professor in the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He had conducted years of research in pre-and-post Tsunami at Nicobars.
Dr. Manish Chandi, former Field Director, Andaman Nicobar Environment Team, Wandoor spent more than two decades in the Islands and worked for his thesis and projects in the pre-and-post tsunami on the Nicobar Islands and Sea Turtles and Saltwater Crocodiles Surveys in the Andamans.
A ceremony was supposed to be held on 16th February 2022 to give away the Citation to Mr. Chanchal Singha Roy but later it was decided that the ceremony will happen Post-Elections.
The Acharya Family congratulated Mr. Roy for being the first winner of the award and wished him well for his future endeavours.
They also urged the youths of the Islands to consider opportunities and means by which the stewardship of the Island Archipelagos can be steered for a secure future for all of us.
