Port Blair, Oct 24: A general body meeting of the Nagarpalika Shramik Sangh was held at Port Blair on 22nd October, 2021 under the chairmanship of Mr. B. Chandrachoodan. The meeting discussed various issues and problems of workers working in the Port Blair Municipal Council and adopted resolutions on it. The meeting through a resolution demanded regularization of the services of daily rated mazdoors of PBMC as hundreds of workers are working on daily rated basis for the last several years. Through another resolution, the meeting demanded to provide suitable residential accommodation to the workers as many of these workers staying at various places are forced to live in unhygienic conditions. The meeting further demanded to provide uniforms, gloves, mask, shoes, raincoat etc to all the workers including daily rated mazdoors. Through another resolution, the meeting demanded to extend the financial benefit of 1/30th of pay plus DA to all the daily rated workers of PBMC.
Addressing the meeting, B. Chandrachoodan, President of the Union and General Secretary, CITU A & N State Committee said that the central government and its Administration in the islands are pursuing various anti-working class and anti-people policies. He said that unemployment in the islands is increasing and the BJP government at the Centre has failed to create jobs for the local youths in the islands. He expressed concern over the spiraling prices. Mr. R. Surendran Pillai, President, CITU State Committee and Mr. SP Kalairajan, Vice President, CITU State Committee also addressed the meeting. A large number of workers of PMBC attended the meeting.
