Port Blair, Oct 24: A training-cum-awareness on “Management practices in rice seed production” was organized at Madhupur village of Diglipur on 19thOctober 2021 for the benefit of rice farmers under AICRP seed (Crop) in collaboration with ICAR-CIARI KVK, Nimbudera. A total of 55 (35 male and 20 female) farmers got benefited from the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI and the Chief Guest complimented the efforts of the team of Scientists of ICAR-CIARI and the farmers in popularizing CIARI’s high yielding rice varieties in participatory mode in large cluster of villages at Diglipur. He was happy to note on the replacement of HYVs of rice introduced by CIARI. Further, he exhorted the young group of farmers to form small group to establish mini-modern rice mill for getting better head rice recovery which will fetch higher prices in the market. He also highlighted on the importance of Integrated farming system and the role of each component such as crop, dairy, poultry, fishery and piggery in enhancing farm income. He concluded his remarks by impressing upon to harvest paddy crop from bottom so that the paddy straw can be used as a fodder for cattle after treating with urea and molasses.
Dr. P. K. Singh, Principal Scientist and Head (I/c), CIARI emphasized about scientific management practices involved in rice seed production. Dr. Y. Ramakrishna, Principal Scientist and Head, KVKs of ANI briefed about integrated management of pest and diseasesin rice crop. Dr. Jai Sunder, Principal Scientist, CIARI highlighted the role of goat and poultry in integrated farming system. Dr. K. Venkatesan, Scientist, CIARI talked about role of quality seed in rice cultivation. In the introductory remarks Dr. S. K. Zamir Ahmed, Principal Scientist and In-charge, Social Science Section, ICAR-CIARI, welcomed the august gathering and highlighted on the importance of such programme followed by interaction to get first hand feedback on the bottlenecks and solution to carry forward.
The team also visited the rice fields, poultry incubation unit and gave scientific advice for better management of the enterprises and it’s up-scaling. The program concluded with the Vote of thanks proposed by Mr. K. Shyam Sunder Rao.
