Port Blair, June 02: Andaman and Nicobar Islands have reported 57 deaths till today, in the second wave of COVID-19 virus and the drop in cases has been found marginal instead of reaching the plateau.
In the first wave, Andaman and Nicobar Islands had reported 62 death and hence the total number of death in the UT since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic is 119, as per the last updated reports available.
The South Andaman District Administration recently extended lockdown in the District till 7 June 2021, as only a marginal dip in COVID-19 positive cases has been observed till now in the second wave.
“While in entire India the number of cases in the second wave is coming down but in Andaman we are still on a plateau. The number of cases is not coming down as it was expected,” said the Director of Health Services in Andaman, Dr. Omkar Singh in a recent interview.
The Director added that in the second wave there has been some changes in the pattern of COVID-19, as it was seen in Mainland India too like, in some cases deaths are reported 4 to 5 days after discharging a patient.
“After analysis, we have found that in most cases people who have not taken the vaccine are dying or those who are having comorbidities. Deaths of some young patients have also been reported which is a major cause of concern as if the third wave comes, it may affect the young generation also,” the DHS said.
He urged all Islanders to follow all COVID-19 protocol and also go for vaccination.
As per official records so far a total of 1,26,285 doses of vaccines have been administered in A&N Islands.
As per the last update available, at present altogether there are 143 COVID-19 active cases in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and since the beginning total 7043 people have been tested COVID-19 positive in this UT out of which 6781 people have recovered.
