Port Blair, Dec 11: Yesterday Facebook Account of one media person was hacked by some fraudster and ‘friend requests’ were sent to many in his friends in contact list.
Later many of his friends got request from this fake Facebook account to deposit an amount ranging from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 25,000 rupees to one particular bank account.
One of his friends believed the fraudster and transferred Rs. 20,000 to the account number forwarded by the fraudster.
The matter was immediately reported to Cyber Crime Cell of Andaman and Nicobar Police, who took prompt action to secure the original Facebook Account.
Unfortunately the fake account disappeared before cyber cell could trace the fraudster.
Interestingly, all the requests for money were sent through Messenger app with original photo of the account holder featuring in his original profile picture.
As this seems to be a new way of duping those using Facebook, everyone should be cautious while accepting “Friend requests” from existing friends.
Moreover Security setting of Facebook needs to be reinforced and password changed frequently to avoid such mishaps.
If still anyone demands money through social media platforms, it should be brought to the notice of Cyber cell of A & N Police for quick action. It is obvious that no friend will demand money through any app including Messenger. People using social media platforms should be careful about breach of their security while dealing with unknown people.
Experts suspect that such accounts are hacked, when Facebook or Whatsapp users click on suspicious forwarded links, forwarded by unknown or known persons with attracting captions like ‘Click for amazing Amazon Offers” “Click here for Free Online Gift” etc. General Public must be very cautions against such forwarded messages with a link and catchy caption. In any cause any link, which looks too suspicious or too catchy must not be clicked, if it is not forwarded by a genuine person.
