Port Blair, Sept 20: The NDA-led nationwide bandh against diesel price hike, cap on LPG cylinders and FDI in retail had only partial impact in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Out of 36 inhabited Islands, some impacts of Bharat Bandh could be seen only in Port Blair region of South Andaman and Rangat region of Middle Andaman. Other Islands like Billyground and Hut Bay also witnessed only minor impact of Bharat Bandh.
At Port Blair and Rangat around 50 percent of shops remained closed.
NDA workers could be seen visiting market area in groups and requesting shopkeepers to keep their shops closed to support the Bandh.
“We did not force anybody, most of the shopkeepers supported the Bandh without even asking. Some Private Bus operators did not operate their buses to support the Bandh Called by NDA,” Mr. R Mohan the President of A & N State BJP unit told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today.
The Andaman and Nicobar Police had made especial security arrangement to ensure safety of public.
“The Bandh was quite peaceful. 50 percent shops in Port Blair were open. There was no forceful closure of shops. We had ensured proper security arrangements so that there is no incident of violation or forceful closure of shops,” Mr. S B S Tyagi, the Superintendent of Police of South Andaman told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today.
However, in Islands like Diglipur and Campbell Bay the impact of Bharat Bandh was almost zero.
