Port Blair, June 24: Although Nicobar District is witnessing moderate to heavy rainfall, the South, Middle and North Andaman Islands are not getting sufficient rain due to lack of excess moisture, says IMD.
According to Indian Meteorological Department the recent Super Cyclone Amphan is also a big reason why Andaman is getting less rain.
“Not just Andaman, in entire South India the rainfall comparatively is less till now. Before June Andaman was supposed to get heavy rainfall but due to recent Super Cyclone over Bay of Bengal the rainfall is less. Even in next five days there won’t be much rainfall in South Andaman, Middle and North Andaman area. However Nicobar District will witness moderate to heavy rainfall,” said Mr. Pravat Rabi Naskar, Scientist C, Officer In-charge, of IMD Port Blair.
Presently urban areas of South Andaman are facing severe water scarcity despite timely arrival of monsoon over Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Some urban areas of South Andaman are getting water once in six days.
Sadly, North Eastern Monsoon, which hits Andaman and Nicobar Islands in December every year, is failing with striking regularity and whenever this North Eastern Monsoon fails, Andaman region witnesses severe water crisis. Last year also North Eastern Monsoon failed and less rainfall after this year’s South West Monsoon added to the plight.
This is high time that Administration must find or create alternate water source so that in coming days these Islands do not have such water crisis. Water harvesting is presently only on papers and people are not taking it seriously, which need to be forced on public and government department.
