Port Blair, Sept 10: South Andaman residents were woebegone today after heavy rainfall led to extensive water-logging in various areas of South Andaman region. The rainfall exposed the tall claims of Port Blair Municipal Council regarding sanitation and upkeep of drains in the city.
Since, early morning, the rain started paralyzing life by causing water-logging in many areas including the main bazaar and Mohanpura market. Situation was same in College area, Prothrapur, Calicut, Dollygunj and Austinabad areas.
Commuters’ problems were compounded by the further deterioration of roads by the rains. Many heavy vehicles, four wheelers got stuck on the waterlogged roads, and several two-wheeler riders fell while traversing the water inundated roads.
Low lying areas in the City areas were the worst affected as drain water flowed out onto the streets in the absence of a proper drainage system. “Drains are always clogged in this area, but no one from Port Blair Municipal Council comes here to ensure cleanliness in the area,” said an old resident of Port Blair city.
The residents complained that Port Blair Municipal Council and Andaman PWD authorities have failed to adopt a comprehensive strategy to solve the menace of water-logging in the city. A shop owner of Mohanpura market said that we always face this water logging problem this leads us to suffer a huge loss from years “The drains are never cleaned properly,” he said.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha Secretary PBMC Mr Rakesh Bali told that during heavy rainfall and high tide water comes in, which causes water logging.
“I went for a lunch yesterday and behind that house I saw chocked drain, this is the basic reason of water-logging, people have to learn to keep city drains clean. People make their houses anywhere,” Mr. Bali told Andaman Sheekha putting all blames on Port Blarians. The Secretary PBMC also maintained that PBMC cleans all the city drains regularly.
