Port Blair, Sept 05: Even after series of deaths of electricity employees because of electrocution the Administration seems to have learnt no lesson. At present the Administration is carrying out the work of trimming branches of old trees, which have become a major threat to Port Blairians. But sadly to ensure safety of Port Blairians the Administration is putting life of some low-paid employees in great risk.
Andaman Sheekha has found that while carrying out the works of cutting branches of old trees, no safety equipment or safety gears are provided to the person, who climb up 15-20 mtre high trees.
Driven by poverty and need these employees have no other option than listening to the orders and carry out this dangerous work, even without wearing a safety cable. Sadly nobody in Administration thinks about safety of these low-paid employees, who get hardly Rs. 1 lakh from LG’s Relief Fund in case of their death. Are we waiting for some more deaths before taking any preventive step? Does life of these low paid employees have any value?
