Mayabunder, Jan 08: Gross violation of guidelines again by the Andaman Nicobar administration, the MGNREGA workers who are supposed to get their pay every week have not received their payment since last five months following which the MGNREGA workers of Pahalgaon Gram Panchayat are struggling to run their livelihood.
As per reports, around 20-25 workers of MGNREGA at Pahalgaon received their last pay in the month of September after which they have not received any payment.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, the Pradhan Pahalgaon Gram Panchayat, Mr Shibananda Bairagi said that around Rs 4,30,500 payment is pending for the labourers in his area.
“All the workers are approaching me and requesting me for payment but panchayat has no role in paying the MGNREGA workers, it’s the job of the District Commissioner Office as the fund for the same is directly deposited in their office,” said Mr Bairagi.
Mr Bairagi further said that this issue takes place all the time and even last year there was a huge delay in payment to the MGNREGA workers of his area.
On the condition of anonymity, talking to Andaman Sheekha, a lady worker of MGNREGA said that she somehow managed her livelihood by taking a loan from her relatives, but now there is no one left to whom she can ask for a loan. “Now I don’t have even a penny to buy necessary household items,” said the lady. The district administration must take a call before the MGNREGA workers of the area take any extreme step.
