Port Blair, Jan 07: The PRI members of Tushnabad and Collinpur along with dozens of villagers of the area staged a Chakka Jam protest at Tushnabad Bengali Basti, yesterday morning following non- fulfillment of long pending demands.
Cancellation of construction of road from Amrit Lall house to Mahua Dera Beach including development of beach was one of the major reasons for which the villagers agitated.
“Increase in bootlegging shops and gambling in the Tuhnabad area, non- issuance of cylinders to most of the villagers under Ujjwala scheme, government officers absence in the gram sabha meetings were the other major reasons that lead the villagers to stage the protest,” said a grassroot leader of the area.
It is learnt that after the interference of BJP State President, Mr Vishal Jolly the SDM came to the spot and later, a meeting under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner South Andaman was called in his chamber.
All the issues was discussed during the said meeting and after assurances were given to the villagers that all the demands will be fulfilled in a stipulated time, the protest was called off.
