Port Blair, Jan 07: Several Jawans of MARCOS unit of the Indian Navy reportedly vandalized a bakery shop situated near Bhatu Basti Junction yesterday late evening and grievously injured the owner and a customer of the bakery.
As per reports, Jawans of local MARCOS unit came in a group with rods and sticks in hand, covering their faces with masks.
As per public some Jawans were in inebriated state and were very violent. As per eyewitnesses, after the incident all Jawans escaped from the place in two defence vehicles.
On information, a team of police including the Station Head Officer, Inspector Mahesh Yadav rushed to the spot and after interrogation with the eyewitnesses he began investigation in this regard. Later a Swaraj Mazda bus was spotted with all the suspects after which police team intercepted the vehicle and soon public also gheraoed the Swaraj Mazda bus.
It is learnt that after a lot of drama and heated arguments finally the matter solved when PS Pahargaon team, under the leadership of Dy.S.P South Andaman, Mr. Ajay Rai, SP South Andaman, Mr Manoj C filed a FIR in this regard and arrested a senior Navy Officer of MARCOS, Lt. Commander Mayank Sharma. The navy officer was sent to Judicial Custody later today.
As per sources the problem started when the main accused Lt. Commander, Mayank Sharma reached the Bakery Shop and misbehaved with the bakery owner. The Bakery owner asked him to leave the premises, which reportedly hurt his ego following which he immediately called his Jawans to attack the shop.
It is learnt that now the police team may try to obtain police remand of the accused and after his re-interrogation and with help of CCTV footage will identify other accused involved in this case of vandalism and attack on civilians.
Such irresponsible and violent act of Jawans of MARCOS unit has brought a bad name for entire Andaman and Nicobar Command. Video of the attack taken by public is now making rounds in social media, which is making Islanders upset. Andaman Sheekha tried to contact the PRO of ANC in this regard but a comment in this regard could not be obtained from ANC’s side.
