Port Blair Oct.4: As a part of 65th Wildlife Week Celebration, 2019, the Wildlife Division, Department of Environment & Forests, A & N Islands in collaboration with JNRM has organized Inter-Collegiate Youth Parliament Competition on Conservation Vs Development at JNRM. Mr. P.Naveen Kumar, IFS, Deputy Conservation of Forests (Wildlife) was the Chief Guest on the occasion and while addressing the gathering he underscored the importance of youths especially college students in taking part such competition which certainly will send message to the society. The Guest of Honour Dr.N.Francis Xavier, Principal, JNRM stressed the need for articulation for the cause of environment and wildlife. The active participation by the members in debate in this youth parliament is laudable and certainly the students will be a torch bearer to carry the message. Mr.Denils Giles, Editor, Andaman Chronicle was the Jury Member congratulated the student participants for bringing out variety of topics to make debate vibrant. Mrs.Rubina Siddiqui, Ex Member, UTCPCR, second Jury member mentioned the coordination among the team members of students in both opposition and ruling was noteworthy. Dr.K.Abirami, Scientist, ICAR-CIARI the third jury member said the quality of script used by the students for the debates are excellent.
The first prize from ruling party was bagged by Ms.Priya Mondal while the IInd prize and III prizes were won by Ms.Zeba of Andaman College and A.Sharanya of TGCE respectively. The consolation prize gone to Ms.Anisha Banu. The Ist prize from opposition party was bagged by Ms.Nilofer Begum, whereas the II prize and third prizes were won by by Ms. R.S.Reshma and Ms.Pinki Talukdaar respectively. Whole programme was coordinated by Ms. Zeenath Fathima as the chairperson of the house. Earlier Dr.K.Venkatesan, HoD (Home Science) and Youth Parliament National coordinator explained rules, regulations and modalities to be adopted by the participants. The programme was attended by Mr. K.Rajkumar, ACF and Mr. Rajendra Varma, ACF. Ms.R.Barkha, Ranger (Wildlife Division) moderated the entire programme.
A Fishers Camp for the fishermen community at FLC Junglighat was also organised for the fishermen of Junglighat and Dairy Farm. Smti V. Sheeja, AD, Fisheries Department delivered an interactive talk on best fishing practices, rules and regulations with respect to conservation of marine ecosystem where as Smti. Shipra Haldar, Envrionmental Engineer, Science and Technology Department sensitized the fishermen about the coastal and marine pollution and its effect on marine ecosystem. A session on identification of Marine fauna protected under WPA, 1972 was conducted by Mr. Shivendra, RO(P). The camp was attended by around 53 fishermen.
