Port Blair, Oct 03: The 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm in the North & Middle Andaman district. The occasion was marked by Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign by all the Panchayats, government departments and the general public of the district. Various rallies, prabhat pherries and cleanliness campaigns were undertaken to raise awareness about the ills of single use plastic wherein the people pledged to make the Islands plastic free and observe cleanliness and hygiene in their homes, surroundings, offices, etc.
In Mayabunder, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Awanish Kumar, IAS, along with officers of various departments, staff and students of DBRAIT, fishermen of the locality and PRI members participated in the cleanliness drive conducted in the Fishermen Colony, Mayabunder.
Later, a programme was organised in the auditorium of M.G. College, Mayabunder to commemorate the occasion. It was attended by all the heads of the offices of various departments, PRI members, faculty and students of the college. Prayers of all the religion were played followed by the Ramdhun. The Principal, MG College in his address presented a brief on the life of Mahatama Gandhi. Speaking on the occasion the Deputy Commissioner, N&MA emphasized on the relevance of Gandhian Philosophy in today’s world be it global peace, universal brotherhood, mutual co-existence, humanism and others and further urged all to adopt his teachings in our daily lives. Later, pledges on cleanliness and non-violence were also administered to the gathering.
The Deputy Commissioner lauded the effort of DBRAIT for distributing more than 3000 cloth bags in Mayabunder and requested all the stakeholders to participate actively in the pursuit of making these pristine islands plastic-free.
Similar programmes were also organised in both the tehsils of Diglipur and Rangat under the guidance of respective Assistant Commissioners. The Deputy Commissioner expressed his gratitude to all for observing the Day in a befitting manner.
